Volunteering

In an effort to increase readiness to respond to a likely pandemic flu outbreak, the Athens City-County Health Department under the direction of the Ohio Department of Health is registering medical volunteers who will be able to assist in the administration of medications, antivirals, or vaccines within their respective counties. The Athens City-County Health Department, as outlined in its Mass Prophylaxis/Vaccination Clinic Plan, is attempting to recruit medical personnel capable of distributing medications and administering vaccinations who can volunteer at a designated mass clinic.

The health department is signing up medical volunteers for both the Athens County Health Reserve Corps (HRC) and Athens County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC). Volunteers may sign up for either HRC or MRC. However, volunteers are encouraged to sign up with both HRC and MRC.

Athens County Health Reserve Corps

The Athens County Health Reserve Corps (HRC) consists of licensed health care professional/medical volunteers residing in Athens County willing to assist the health department protect the public’s health during a state of emergency in Athens County. Volunteers would be working with the health department in Athens County only.

Although there is no imminent threat against Athens County, a major emergency may overburden first responders and health care providers. Volunteers may be called upon to assist emergency workers. Emergencies include major fires, automobile accidents, floods, blizzards, tornadoes, unusual disease outbreaks, or acts of terrorism. Volunteers will be invited to future training events that fit their skills and interests.

HRC volunteers may participate in large-scale emergency response operations, including rapid screening, disease investigation & contact tracing, and mass prophylaxis/vaccination.

HRC & MRC volunteers may include (but are not limited to) the following types of health care personnel:

  • Certified Medical or Nurse Asst. (CMA, CNA)
  • Dentist
  • Emergency Medical Tech. (EMT) or Paramedic
  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
  • Mental Health Provider, Social Worker, or Psychologist
  • Nurse Practitioner (NP)
  • Pharmacist or Pharmacy Tech.
  • Physician
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Veterinarian

Athens County Medical Reserve Corps

The Athens County Medical Reserve Corps is a component of The Citizen Corps of Athens County. Any resident of Athens County with a medical background at least of 18 years of age who is willing to help the county or the nation during health emergencies can volunteer for the Medical Reserve Corps. Volunteers will be invited to future training events that fit their skills and interests.

The Medical Reserve Corps is a great community builder, allowing Athens County residents to take an active role in emergency response in Athens County or in any part of the country.
